Having a Few Problems Fighting The Super Bosses, huh?
Fighting Shinryuu
It's not uncommon for the unknowing player to make their way through the final dungeon, open up a chest, then get brutally destroyed by some dragon in it. Heck, it happened to me the first time through, so I learned my lesson. That boss is Shinryuu, the easier of the two super bosses.
There are many ways to beat him, but the way I'm about to describe works quite well and almost ensures victory; you never know, he could get a lucky hit in, fowling up your plans.
When making you way through the final dungeon, you'll meet up with some old men running around in jail cells. If you touch them, you'll fight them; they'll start as the old man (Arute Roite), then turn into a large monster once defeated (Jura Eibisu). If you steal from the Jura Eibisu, there's a small chance you can steal a Hiryuu no Yari. Try to get 4; they're more powerful than the Excaliber and work great against dragons. Another way to get them is by stealing from Suishouryuus in the final area, but the chance of getting one is much less; it's likely you'll steal an Elixir instead.
Here's some of Shinryuus statistics. He has several devastating attacks, and some of them are just there to piss you off. Here's his attacks:
- Tidal Wave
- Shinryuu's initial attack, it is more of less the most damaging attacks in the entire game. It will do 8000+ damage unless you're protected against it in some way, but he will hardly ever use it again.
- Atomic Ray
- Watch as all of your characters are fried by red hot lasers! This attack does 1500-3000 damage, but it can be easily absorbed by items such as the Flame Shield. Also, there is an accessory that can be purchased for the highway robbery price of 50000 gil that will do the same.
- Shi no Ruuretto (Death Roulette)
- This is one of those attacks which will be having you pulling your own hair out. A random character will be selected, then killed. Even though it cycles through Shinryuu himself, if it lands on him, the death attack will have no effect. Thus, this will always kill one of your characters or do nothing. He uses it quite often too.
- Poison Breath
- One of Shinryuu's weakest attacks, this does 100-1500 damage to all characters, but poisons everybody as well. Unless you have something that protects from poison equipped, this could have you wasting time trying to use antidotes and spells to fix your characters up.
- Mighty Guard
- If Shinryuu uses this, it becomes very difficult to damage him. It will double his defence and magic defence, which are already quite high; I tried using Meteo once when he had this on, and it did a grand total of 64 damage! make sure you Dispel it, quick.
- Maelstrom
- A very deadly attack, this brings your characters down to a critical level of HP, instantly. If he uses another attack right after, kiss your party goodbye. This is another one of his common attacks.
- Level 2 Old
- This is an annoying attack, for it greatly decreases you stats. Try to heal this condition if you're hit with it right away.
- Level 3 Flare
- If you're at a multiple level of 3, your characters may end up getting completely destroyed by this spell; it can do 9999 damage. I usually fight him when my level is a prime number (usually 61).
- Fubuki (Blizzard/Snowstorm)
- Very similar to Atomic Ray, this also does 1500-3000 damage to all characters, but is ice elemental instead. You can equip an item such as the Ice Shiled to absorb it as well.
- Inazuma (Lightning)
- Just like Atomic Ray and Fubuki, this does 1500-3000 damage to all characters, but is lightning elemental.
- Akuma no Hitomi (Demon Eye/Pupil)
- This attack soes no damage, but turns one character to stone. You can use Ribbons to protect against this attack.
- Shinryuu's stats:
- HP: 55500
- MP: 51000
- LV: 97
- Attack Power: 175
- Defence: 60
- Speed: 87
- Magic Power: 20
- Magic Defence: 60
- Strengths/Weaknesses: Absorns Light, normal against everything else.
- 0 EXP, 0 GIL
Before you take on the dragon of all dragons, you need over 4000 HP and the Jump command equipped. Also, make sure everybody is in the back row and that your level isn't a multiple of 3. The reason for so many HP is that it's likely Shinryuu will be able to use his initial attack, Tidal Wave, after you've had time to put in 1 command, most likely for Faris. By using Mighty Guard, it will do half damage (around 4000). Also, you can try equipping items that will let you absorb it (I don't know of any; I usually just let him hit me with it). Once he has used it, he'll hardly ever use it again. Heal up quickly, then attempt to use Berserk on him. If it hits, great. If it misses, try again; be careful, for he can use LV3 Flare and LV2 Old, which are both very annoying. His LV3 Flare can do 2000-9999 damage, and you don't want Old weakening your party. Once Shinryuu has gone berserk, watch out; any characters in the front row will take 4000-8000 damage from his attacks, 2000-4000 in the back. If he's used a Mighty Guard on himself, make sure you Dispel it; it really reduces the damage he takes.
Now, all you have to do is do Jump or regular attacks over and over until he dies; since he's berserk, all he'll do is attack. Just make sure to watch your HP, because he's fairly fast as well. You can try stealing a Ryuu no Muchi (Dragon Whip), the most powerful whip in the game, but it's easier to get these from Stingrays. The jump attacks will always do 9999 damage if you have a Hiryuu no Yari equipped, while normal attacks should be doing more than 2000. Keep plugging away at his 55000 HP and you'll eventually win the Ragnarok, the most powerful sword in the game.
Fighting Omega
Near one of the save points in the final dungeon, you'll see an interesting little robot moving around. GO AROUND HIM! He is Omega, the harder of the two super bosses, and unless you're heavily buffed up, you have no chance in hell of even denting him.
There are several things you should do: equip Ribbons to protect from status ailments, use Float on everybody, have something that allows you to absorb fire equipped, and Time Magic. There are several ways to beat Omega as well; all of them are difficult to do unless you've mastered almost all of you classes and are over LV 50.
Here's some of Omega's attacks. They are all very powerful, but most of them can be absorbed of have the damage decreased somewhat:
- Atomic Ray
- This is one of his weaker attacks; red fire-elemental lasers will fry your party, and commonly does 2500-4000 damage to everybody. If you can, equip items that protect you from fire, such as the Flame Shield. This will let you absorb the damage, decreasing the need to heal.
- Wave Cannon
- This is one of his most annoying attacks, mainly because the damage it does is equivalent to half you max HP. Thus, if he uses this twice in a row without your characters healing in between, you're screwed. this attack cannot be avoided or absorbed, and causes the Slip status ailments as well, decreasing your HP little by little every second.
- Jishin (Quake / Earthquake)
- Unless you have Float on, it's likely this attack will kill you. It does anywhere from 5000-8500 damage to all characters; however, he rarely uses it. With Float, it'll never hit, so you'll have time to heal up or make an attack.
- Blaster
- Frustration level builds up if he uses this; it will almost always kill one character and, if it doesn't, it will paralyze them instead. It cannot be absorbed or defended against, so it's very deadly. Usually, I use the Return Time magic to restart battle if Omega uses this attack first.
- Flame Thrower
- Omega's weakest attack, this sends a column of flame at one character, which does 1000-3000 damage. Like Atomic Ray, this can be absorbed with items such as the Flame Shield.
- Circle
- Another one of Omega's frustrating attacks, this kicks one of your characters out of battle, forcing you to fight with three. Make sure you use the Return spell if this happens; it's likely you'll need all four characters to beat him.
- Delta Attack
- Deadly? No. Annoying? Very. Omega's Delta Attack may only do around 1000 damage, but it will petrify the target. Equip Ribbons to prevent this.
- Mustard Bomb
- Another one of Omega's attacks that only hits one character, it is easy to recover from, for it does around 3200 damage. Unfortunately, it cannot be avoided or absorbed.
- Missile/Rocket Punch
- The main reason that Omega is so hard is because of his counter attack; if he's ever hit, regardless if it does damage or not, he will counter with several missile type attacks. Missile takes off 75% of your current HP, while Rocket Punch chops off 50% of your current HP and confuses the target.
- Also, here's his stats:
- HP: 55530
- MP: 60700
- LV: 119
- Attack Power: 115
- Defence: 190
- Speed: 76
- Magic Power: 95
- Magic Defence: 150
- Strengths/Weaknesses: Absorbs everything except lightning, which he's weak against.
- 0 EXP, 50000 GIL
Method 1: this isn't the best method, but it works if you're very lucky. Omega will likely get the first attack; once you've healed up, use Carbunkle. This will make you almost unable to heal, which sounds crazy, but then use Bolt 3 on all your characters; it will reflect for 7000-9999 damage. Omega will counterattack, but just keep using Bolt 3 over and over. If you're lucky, and Omega doesn't use an attack like Wave Cannon, you'll eventually beat him.
Method 2: this method doesn't work very well either, so I modified it into method 3. Use Flare Sabre on one of your characters; this will let them hit Omega to actually do damage, usually around 2500. If you use 2 weapons or/with Midareuchi, you can do anywhere from 5000-20000 damage in one flurry. Make sure to heal up too, for Omega will counter with his missile attacks.
Method 3: use this method if you want to completely destroy Omega in one attack. First of all, make sure one of your characters has the Ragnarok equipped, along with another weapon that can be enchanted, such as the Chicken Knife (since I ran quite often before I got it, it had 128 attack power at the time). At the start of the battle, keep everybody healthy and use haste, Mighty Guard, whatever you need. If things don't turn out your way, use the Return spell to restart the battle. Let the person that has the two powerful weapons use Bolt 3 Sabre on himself. When his next turn comes up, use Midareuchi. If you're strong enough, then each hit will do 7500-9999 damage, for 8 hits, doing 60000-80000 damage and easily killing him. You don't win much, just a medal for your efforts, but hey, he's a hard boss to beat. It took me quite a while to find an easy way to conquer the damn machine.
So there you have it; how to beat the secret bosses of Final Fantasy 5. Midareuchi is the last attack you get from mastering the Archer job; it hits four times with each weapon you have equipped. The Jump attack can be earned from the Dragon Knight job, and Bolt 3 Sabre is a level 5 Enchanter attack, I believe. You can use two weapons from the Ninja job, and most of the best items can be bought at the Mirage Town; if you spent time powering up classes by Movers, you should have planty of money. I usually use the Suppin job (or no job), or the Mimicker job; once other jobs are mastered, they automatically have some skills equipped.
